Buffalo Creek Xterra Triathlon

Submitted by monty on Sun, 2009-06-21 21:20.

Lori and Katie competed in the Buffalo Creek Xterra Triathlon. They both completed the Short Course: 1 mile swim, 10 mile mountain bike, 2.5 mile run. Both of them had a fantastic race despite the cold (61 deg) water.

The results aren't posted yet. So, I will update this as soon as they are available. The preliminary results on race day had Lori sitting at 25th place overall for the short course!

Andy's Graduation

Submitted by monty on Sun, 2009-06-14 00:00.

We went to Thousand Oaks, CA to see Andy graduate from High School. He graduated with honors (4.3 GPA)! While we were there we spent some time hiking, biking and hanging out at the beach. Here are the photos.

Racing Moto in Ellis

Submitted by monty on Tue, 2009-05-26 20:04.

The best motocross track in Kansas is right in our back yard! We also know who the fastest rider is. In a 2 lap contest, Brandon easily beat Travis. I can see the rematch already. Here are the photos

Memorial Weekend in Ellis

Submitted by monty on Tue, 2009-05-26 10:39.

We travelled to Ellis for Monty's 25th Class reunion. The reunion was a bust (only 10 people showed up), but we had a great time hanging out with the family on the farm. Lori and I did a couple of bike rides. We had a jam session with Brandon. (He can really play the guitar!) We also had a BBQ and played some baseball. It was a fantastic weekend. Here are the photos.

A Bike Ride in Denver

I decided to take the camera and hit the road to some of the less desirable places in Denver. This is just a taste. Check out the photos.

Monty's Music

Submitted by monty on Sun, 2009-01-11 01:00.

Monty has a pretty good music studio setup in the basement. Here are some photos of the instruments. Keep reading for more description:

The Gibson SG
My first brand new electric guitar since 1977. This is the ’61 Reissue Gibson SG. In 1961, the traditional Les Paul Standard received a makeover that included a thinner body with sharply pointed horns and eventually a new name - the SG. Today's reissue features the small pickguard and nickel-plated hardware of the original '61. It features a Mahogany body with a Heritage Cherry finish, ’57 Classic Humbucker pickups, and a thinner neck than the current standard SG. This is absolutely my favorite guitar. Super easy to play, amazing tone, and fantastic sustain.

The Amp
The Line 6 Flextone III XL is absolutely awesome. With 32 amp models and 15 cabinet models I can make it sound just like any popular band. It also has several types of reverb, delay, and modulation. I also have a FBV Shortboard connected so I can control the amp with my foot. Having a footswitch allows me to swap out patches without reaching over and twiddling knobs on the amp.

Barack Obama Rally in Denver

Submitted by monty on Sun, 2008-10-26 15:42.

Obama came to Denver and was greeted by more than 100,000 people in Civic Center Park. We felt honored to be in attendance. He was preceded by several of Denver's finest public servants; Mayor John Hickenlooper, Governor Bill Ritter, and Senator John Salazar to name a few.

Obama's speech was outstanding as he outlined his plans for economic recovery, healthcare, and taxes. I think he is an asset to our country and will proud to have him as the next president of the United States.

Here are the photos from the rally.

Mountain Biking Moab

Submitted by monty on Mon, 2008-10-20 09:14.

We loaded up the Vanagon and headed to Moab, UT for a weekend of mountain biking. This was Mark's first trip to the desert to ride. We started on the Slick Rock Trail which is just east of Moab on the rocks. The trail is painted on the rocks, so you just follow the white lines. It's amazing how your tires just stick to the rock!

After riding Slick Rock we headed up to Arches Nat'l Park to see the sights. It is a very beautiful place. There are over 2000 cataloged arches in the park. We stopped at Double Arch to enjoy the natural beauty of the rock.

On day 2 we took a shuttle van to the top of Hazard Pass to ride down the Hazard Trail and Porcupine Rim trails. It was 30 miles of downhill fun. Almost the entire trail was single track, rocky and fast. We had a total blast, and were pretty wiped out by the time we got back to Moab.

The final trail we rode was the Sovereign Trail. It is a great single track trail just North of Moab. It was hot, rocky and challenging.

What a great weekend. Can't wait to go again!

14er : La Plata

Submitted by monty on Sat, 2008-09-27 00:00.

Even though the guide books list this mountain as a moderate climb, it was pretty hard. It was much steeper than we expected and there were 2 false summits. We also had some excitement on the way down as the storm approached. My trekking poles started buzzing from the electricty in the air! It was scary for a bit...
